Community of Practice

As part of our Cultural Rucksack programme with schools, we have an open invitation for SENDCos, teachers and gallery staff to join termly meetings at galleries in Nottingham.

We’re working together to improve access and inclusion, support school visits to galleries, create resources and advocate for change.

Guiding Principles of SEND / Galleries Group

  • There is a broad  spectrum of additional needs (SEMH, PLMD, visual, auditory., physical)
  • Every child is an individual. We need to be open minded and curious and not make assumptions about what will work.
  • Purposeful auditing of spaces, completion of risk assessments and pre-visits are the foundations for effective safeguarding. (Galleries welcome auditing of content and logistics).
  • Our work should include parents and families as key stakeholders.
  • Clear specific and timely communication between all partners and stakeholders is key. (Individual needs, points of contact, expectations: written information but also shared through conversation).
  • We are all committed to enabling positive experiences of arts and gallery visits for children with additional needs. We will celebrate them.

Key contacts - support for teachers

ChalleNGe is working with two experienced SEND/Inclusion specialists with a creative background, to support teachers and galleries with devising Action Learning Proposals.

If you have a partnership idea to test or pilot, and need up to £1000 to help make it happen, contact Pasha Kincaid and/or Nikki Charlesworth, our SEND/Inclusion Specialists to arrange a one-to-one meeting.

You can also bring your ideas to a SEND/Galleries meeting for discussion and support from the wider group.

It taught me that, if we truly listen to, observe, and try to understand what a person experiences with natural joy and then respond to this fully, then magic can happen!
