‘We are Here!’ is a film project engaging with 12-24 yr olds in Nottingham, featuring their voices and stories about creativity and life in lockdown.
The last year has been a challenging time for young people, but many have found new outlets for their creativity, such as cooking, writing, making videos, dancing, gaming, photography, drawing, gardening and reading. Others have been getting their voices heard through protest, being local heroes in their community by volunteering at foodbanks, or just being kind to neighbours.
As lockdown begins to ease, we want to hear from young people about their experiences and how the last year has affected them, creating a short film featuring the voices and stories of young people.
The conversations will create a short 10-12min film, reflecting on the diversity of young peoples' experiences and what creativity means to them.
Local filmmaker Ben Harriott and Creative Engagement Manager Bo Olawoye are connecting with youth and community leaders around the city to arrange meetings either online or in-person to plan how best to capture the voices of young people from across Nottingham. They can visit your youth group either online or at your community or youth centre. The conversations will either be audio recorded or filmed, depending on your wishes. Consent forms will need to be completed for under 18s.
Here are a few questions to get you thinking about what you'd like to talk about:
What do you think is important to be asking young people at this time? Let us know by email at hello@challengenottingham.co.uk
Everyone who takes part will be invited to a public screening of “What’s your story” projected outside (side of a building, on the street) in Nottingham.
We aim to edit your stories so they are available on our website as a record of life and creativity in lockdown. The short film (10-12mins) will be shared on social media, with youth and community groups and arts organisations across the city.
A short clip from our filming. Here Iman tells us how she keeps positive about her creative abilities.
